A Storm in a Tetley Teacup

4 Apr

TetleyGreen

Long term readers of Gluten Free by the Sea may well remember my blog post about Tetley Green Tea being contaminated with gluten.  At the time this caused much shock and surprise in the coeliac community, and after it made me ill I have avoided it since.  Last week I was tipped off by Kim at Coeliac Delight that the problem may at last be resolved.

I followed this up with Tetley who have come back with this response today:

“I have spoken with our Compliance and Regulatory Team who can confirm that the accidental cross contamination is now resolved.  This means that we have found the cause and worked with suppliers to prevent any reoccurrence and we have eliminated any affected tea from our Supply Chain.

We have now removed this warning from our packs and these are filtering through the distribution system although there are still many packs in the market place and on shelf that do carry the warning so, at the moment, it would be better to check packs as you buy them.”

So it appears there is light at the end of the tunnel.  I checked stock in my local Sainsbury’s last weekend and they still carried the warning.  Please be vigilant and make sure you check packs before purchasing, but the good news is that new boxes of Tetley Green Tea hitting the supply chain will be gluten free.  Note, the previous issue affected all blends of Tetley Green Tea.

Thanks to Tetley for the update and for getting this sorted, and to Kim for letting me know.

Gluten free night at JD’s Grill

29 Mar

Those of you that follow me on Facebook and Twitter will most likely know how much of a fan I am of JD’s Grill.  This fantastic restaurant in Plymouth serves a range of burgers and steaks and also label gluten free options in their menu.  They have been working hard since my original review to increase the amount of gluten free choices on their menu, and now have gluten free options available for all starters and mains as standard.  They also have a good selection of desserts and often have been kind enough to get me a gluten free beer in too.  The food served is right up my street and I am a regular visitor.  The picture below shows me enjoying the Hoofs and Trotters burger, a half pound beef burger topped with cheese and pulled pork on a gluten free bun.  What more could you ask for, other than gluten free fries which they now serve too.  As you can see this Pleases me!

burgerAs part of my work for the Coeliac UK Plymouth Group, we have been looking to organise a meal out for members.  We struck upon the idea of having a meal during Coeliac Awareness week, and the meal will take place on Monday 12th May.  This gives us an opportunity to get some publicity for the event which can help us raise awareness.  JD’s Grill 110 capacity means we can throw the event open to non-members too, so I would like to invite Gluten Free by the Sea readers to join us.  As you will see below JD’s Grill have provided a fantastic menu for the night, which is completely gluten free.  So please come along and enjoy a night of amazing gluten free food and the chance to chat and share tips with gluten free friends.  You will also be able to enjoy a gluten free beer too!

You can see the Facebook page for the event here.  For full details and booking information please see the details below, I hope to see you there.

Free Tickets to the Allergy and Free From Show 2014

23 Mar

Last May I paid my second visit to the Allergy and Free from Show at London Olympia.  It’s always a fantastic event and a great chance to say hello to some of your favourite gluten free producers and of course meet some new ones.  Personally I find it’s always a great opportunity to meet up with gluten free friends from the social media world too.  This years show will again be held at London Olympia, though slightly later than last year with the event running from Friday 4 – Sunday 6 July (2014).

AFF-freetickets

The good news is that Gluten Free by the Sea has teamed up with the Allergy and Free From Show to bring readers of this blog unlimited free tickets to the 2014 show in London.  To apply for your tickets follow this link.

The show as always provides free seminars and a chance to meet a range of specialist consultants, cooking demos, support groups and engage in workshops.  Running simultaneously at Olympia this year will again be V Delicious, a vegetarian good food show.  Of course though, the big attraction is the chance to sample and buy so much great gluten free food from so many suppliers at once.

Last year the show was absolutely packed on the Saturday when we visited as it has become increasingly popular.  The show is moving to a bigger hall this year, so hopefully there will be a little more room for manoeuvre in the Grand Hall.  You can read my review of the 2013 show here.  For those that found the show too busy last year, the organisers are also offering a VIP package this year.  For £45 per person you will get early access to the show, special offers, access to a VIP lounge and more.  You can see full details of benefits and book tickets here.

Personally I think the VIP package sounds great, but is a bit expensive for me on top of the cost of travelling from Plymouth.  However if it does appeal to you then you can get 20% off VIP tickets by using the Gluten Free by the Sea discount code GfreeBYtheSEA

AFF-VIP

If you will also be travelling some distance to London, then it’s very much worth spending a few days in the capital exploring some of the great gluten free places to eat.  For a few ideas have a read of a blog post on one of my previous trips to London here.

So what are you waiting for?  Grab your free tickets to the Allergy and Free From Show here and I will hopefully see you there!
